Starting Up Your Trezor Device

Secure Your Digital Future | Trezor.io/Start

Welcome to Trezor

Congratulations on purchasing your Trezor hardware wallet — a powerful, secure solution for managing your cryptocurrencies. Whether you're using the Trezor Model T or the Trezor Model One, the setup process is simple but crucial. This guide will walk you through setting up your device step by step using the official starting point: trezor.io/start.

Why Use Trezor?

Trezor is a hardware wallet that keeps your private keys offline, protecting them from hackers, malware, and phishing attacks. It supports a wide range of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and more. Unlike software wallets, Trezor gives you physical control over your digital assets.

What You Need to Begin

Step 1: Go to Trezor.io/Start

Open your browser and go to https://trezor.io/start. This is the only official site for initializing your device. Avoid any lookalike URLs or search engine ads that may mislead you to phishing sites.

Important: Never use third-party software to initialize your Trezor. Only use the official Trezor Suite or Web interface.

Step 2: Choose Your Device Model

Select whether you are setting up the Trezor Model T or the Trezor Model One. The setup steps are similar but with slight interface differences.

Step 3: Install Trezor Suite

Trezor Suite is the official desktop app used to interact with your hardware wallet. It allows you to send, receive, and manage coins securely.

Step 4: Connect Your Device

Plug your Trezor into your computer via USB. The Trezor Suite will automatically detect your device. If this is your first time using the device, you will be prompted to install firmware.

Step 5: Install Firmware (If Required)

New Trezor devices ship without firmware to ensure that you're the first to install it. Follow the prompts to install the latest firmware securely.

Security Tip: Always verify the firmware signature during the installation process.

Step 6: Create a New Wallet

Once firmware is installed, you’ll be given the option to create a new wallet or recover an existing one. For new users, select "Create new wallet".

Trezor Suite will generate a new cryptographic seed (your master key) and show you your recovery seed phrase.

Step 7: Backup Your Recovery Seed

This is the most critical part of the setup. Your device will generate a 12 or 24-word recovery seed. Write it down in the exact order and store it somewhere safe — offline and out of sight.

Warning: Anyone with your recovery seed can access all your funds.

Step 8: Use Your Wallet

With setup complete, you can now use your Trezor to:

Optional: Set a PIN and Passphrase

For additional security, you can enable a PIN code on your device, which will be required for every connection. Advanced users can also set up a passphrase, which adds another layer of encryption on top of your recovery seed.

Maintaining Security Over Time
